Bravecations on the Rise: Why I’m Always Braver on Holiday

Travel trends often come and go. Some spark brief excitement; others signal a more permanent shift in how we explore the world. One of those lasting shifts, in our view, is the Bravecation – a growing movement toward travel that challenges us, inspires growth, and encourages us to go beyond the familiar.

Why is this trend here to stay? Because it’s not just about adrenaline or adventure – it’s about meaningful, personal transformation through travel.

What Is a Bravecation?

A Bravecation describes the willingness to try things on holiday that might feel too daunting in everyday life. That could mean skydiving or zip-lining, but according to Marriott Bonvoy’s 2025 “Ticket to Travel” research, it’s often more subtle. Top “brave” actions include trying unusual foods, facing a fear of heights, or starting a conversation with a stranger. It’s about doing something that feels bold for you – physically, mentally, emotionally, or socially. It’s about leaving your comfort zone.

A Deeper Shift Behind the Trend

What’s fueling this movement? Part of it is the growing desire for authentic experiences, personal development, and connection while traveling. Travelers are increasingly seeking more than relaxation – they want stories, challenges, and growth.

The Bravecation trend overlaps with other rising interests like remote and “last chance” travel, digital detoxes, and experience-led wellness tourism. But perhaps the closest relative is adventure travel, a sector expected to surpass $1 trillion globally by 2030.

So, what exactly differentiates Bravecations from adventure tourism? While adventure travel is often associated with physically demanding activities in natural and remote environments, and is closely linked to nature, sustainability, and mental and physical wellbeing, bravecations focus more on personal courage and boldness. Bravecations invite travelers to push themselves beyond their usual boundaries – whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or socially – regardless of the scale.

Why We’re Braver on Holiday

According to the Marriott Bonvoy study, 67% of travelers say they feel braver while on holiday. That number jumps to 78% among 18–24-year-olds and 82% among 25–34-year-olds. The reasons are deeply psychological: being away from routine and expectations can make us feel freer, more emotionally open, and more willing to take risks. Holidays offer a kind of safe space where experimenting, exploring, and expanding our limits feels natural.

Why Bravecations Are Here to Stay

This isn’t just a tourism trend – it’s a reflection of a broader mindset shift. Travelers are placing greater value on experiences that leave a mark: moments of growth, discovery, and transformation. As purpose-led travel continues to shape consumer behavior, Bravecations meet the demand for meaningful, emotionally resonant journeys.
