If you want to bring a breath of fresh air into your vacation planning, you should take a look at the current travel trends, because trends come and go, some of them stay. However, one trend is currently conquering the travel world: JOMO travel. This is short for “Joy of missing out” and refers to the fact that you can really switch off when traveling and simply skip something without a guilty conscience – no stress, no pressure, no rushing. Many people know this all too well from their everyday lives. JOMO is the antithesis of FOMO, which stands for “fear of missing out”, i.e. the fear of missing out or skipping something. The latter is not so rare, as many people in the digital age are constantly surrounded by new impressions and supposedly better realities of life. The fear of not being able to keep up or missing out on something because you are constantly comparing yourself with others can arise and is therefore often omnipresent.
However, according to the data-based travel trend report Unpack’25 by Expedia and FeWo-direkt, the JOMO travel trend is becoming increasingly popular. According to the report, 88 percent of German travelers would like a JOMO vacation and among younger respondents up to the age of 34, the figure is as high as 90 percent. 62% said that a JOMO vacation helps to reduce stress and anxiety, and almost half said that this type of travel allows them to spend quality time with their loved ones. In addition, travelers believe that JOMO travel can have a positive impact on their mental health and overall well-being.
What does the perfect JOMO vacation look like?
The global survey data from Unpack’25 – based on responses from 25,000 adults in 19 countries who have traveled for leisure or plan to do so in the next three years – reveals that the most popular types of accommodations for JOMO travel are charming beach houses, secluded lakeside homes, and cozy mountain chalets. JOMO travelers also seek accommodations with a pool, a quiet garden, a hot tub, and a terrace with a view to fully relax and consciously disconnect.
However, the core essence of JOMO travel is simply doing nothing for a while—unwinding and sleeping in—without the pressure to experience as much as possible or capture the perfect vacation photos. It’s about tuning into one’s own needs, relaxing, and occasionally setting the phone aside. No checking emails, no keeping up with the next Instagram story, wondering why other people’s lives always seem so effortless and luxurious. The key is finding a retreat where you can completely let go, live in the moment, and not be surrounded by too many distractions. The next sightseeing marathon or road trip can wait.
Where is the best place to travel for a JOMO getaway?
According to data from FeWo-direkt, there is a continued interest in beach and mountain destinations that invite relaxation. These insights are based on search queries on FeWo-direkt between January 1 and July 4, 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. For the travel platform Reisereporter, countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Italy, and South Tyrol stand out, as they offer secluded, peaceful retreats far from the hustle and bustle of big cities. Whether in holiday homes, mountain cabins, or chalets, these locations help travelers slow down and unwind without too many tempting distractions.
JOMO travel is all about forgetting the rush of everyday life and letting your soul breathe. And while private vacation rentals are an ideal choice, hotels that offer secluded villas or suites also provide the perfect setting for this kind of escape.
Algarve, recently recognized once again as the World’s Leading Beach Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards, is another haven for JOMO seekers. Elegant accommodations like those from sevencollection offer tranquil oases where travelers can follow their own rhythm and simply go with the flow. Sun on your face, salt on your skin, and feet buried in soft sand—while others chase the next big wave, hunt for the best shopping deals, or search for the perfect Instagram spot, none of that takes priority in JOMO travel. But beyond these hidden holiday gems, there are also destinations and retreats that embrace slow living and provide the perfect escape to unplug.
Many resorts in the Maldives offer their guests secluded beachfront villas with private, direct access to the sea. These private retreats often feature their own small pool, allowing travelers to take a refreshing dip in complete privacy while enjoying a breathtaking view of the azure ocean. Followed by a healthy snack from the hotel kitchen or an invigorating massage—without feeling the need to capture it all in countless photos—this is what JOMO can look like.
On Mallorca, numerous small boutique hotels and so-called agrotourism hotels, such as Son Sabater by Zafiro, have embraced the slow-living concept. Whether it’s strolling through organic gardens, exploring the island’s flora and fauna, or simply indulging in the sweet art of doing nothing while lounging by the pool with a scenic view or a good book—these moments define a truly unhurried JOMO getaway. And discovering small, unexpected details that create lasting, positive memories is almost inevitable. Whether for a long weekend or an entire week, the duration doesn’t matter. Those who embrace their time off fully can recharge in just a few days, perfectly in tune with the rising JOMO travel trend.
