Frankfurt am Main, 13 July 2026. The FIFA World Cup is currently captivating millions of fans around the globe, and for African teams, the tournament has already become a historic success. Never before have ten African national teams qualified for a FIFA World Cup, with nine advancing to the knockout stage. It is a milestone whose impact extends far beyond the game itself.
“Major sporting events generate international attention, evoke emotions and reshape perceptions of destinations. They offer countries the opportunity to be recognised not only as the home of successful football teams, but also as diverse and inspiring travel destinations,” says Hanna Kleber, founder of Voice4Africa.
Five destinations inspiring travellers to discover Africa:
Morocco: Football Success Meets a World-Class Destination
Morocco is once again making football history and will co-host the next FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. At this year’s tournament, the North African nation reached the quarter-finals, making it Africa’s best-performing team.
Beyond football, Morocco has long established itself as one of Africa’s most compelling travel destinations. From the imperial cities of Marrakesh and Fez to the Atlas Mountains, the spectacular earthen village of Aït Ben Haddou, the dunes of the Sahara and the Atlantic coastline with its internationally renowned surf spots, the country offers remarkable diversity. In 2025, Morocco welcomed almost 20 million visitors—the highest number in its history.
Egypt: Where World Heritage Meets Football Passion
Having reached the Round of 16, Egypt is once again attracting international attention with its rich football tradition. The Land of the Pharaohs also recorded Africa’s strongest tourism growth last year, with visitor numbers increasing by 20 percent.
Travellers associate Egypt with the Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of the Kings, the Red Sea and thousands of years of history. The new Grand Egyptian Museum, home to the complete Tutankhamun collection and King Khufu’s original solar boat, welcomed three million visitors during its first six months after opening.
Cabo Verde: The Island Nation Emerging as the Tournament’s Surprise Package
Cabo Verde celebrated a historic achievement by qualifying for its first-ever FIFA World Cup and impressed football fans around the world with its disciplined defending and fearless transition play. At the same time, the West African island nation is increasingly gaining recognition as one of the continent’s most attractive island destinations. The volcanic landscapes of Fogo provide excellent opportunities for hiking and sustainable adventure tourism, while Sal and Boa Vista are renowned for their beautiful beaches. Those venturing beyond the major resorts will discover the tranquil shores and unspoilt nature of Maio as well as the vibrant cultural scene of São Vicente, including music festivals and the famous carnival in the cultural capital of Mindelo.
South Africa: Where Sport and Tourism Go Hand in Hand
As host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa understands the power of major sporting events. The country’s first-ever qualification for the knockout stage at this year’s tournament reflects its growing presence on the international football stage.
South Africa also offers extraordinary diversity far beyond its famous safari experiences. Cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg combine jazz, arts, sporting events and world-class gastronomy, while the country’s interior features spectacular national parks and authentic cultural experiences across semi-desert, mountain and coastal landscapes. These are best explored actively by mountain bike or on guided hiking tours.
Ghana: Football Tradition Meets Cultural Heritage
Few West African countries are as closely connected to international football as Ghana, thanks to decades of successful youth development through its many football academies. At the same time, the coastal nation has become one of Africa’s leading cultural destinations. Initiatives such as the “Year of Return” have positioned Ghana globally as a destination for cultural heritage tourism and the African diaspora. Historic forts, vibrant markets, national parks and a thriving arts and music scene make Ghana an inspiring destination. More than 500 kilometres of coastline also offer an impressive variety of beaches, ranging from lively seaside towns with music and nightlife to peaceful natural bays and eco-lodges.
This year’s FIFA World Cup demonstrates the potential of major sporting events to showcase African destinations on the global stage. Alongside sporting excellence, African fashion, music and cultural diversity are receiving unprecedented international attention, while players are becoming ambassadors for their home countries far beyond the football pitch.
