With Switzerland boasting a current population of approximately 8.77 million and counting, it is crucial to recognize its substantial financial resources, distinguishing it as a significant contender for long-distance travel compared to other European markets such as France and Germany. A recent study conducted by the Swiss Travel Collective and Allianz Insurance observed a significant uptick in travel spending among Swiss residents since 2022, with a remarkable increase of 31%. In contrast, Germany saw only a 17% rise, and France experienced a modest uptick of just 3%.
According to the authors of the Swiss Bankers study on consumer habits (2023), one reason for the increase in intercontinental travel could be the catch-up effect after the coronavirus period. In 2022, 88% of the resident population undertook at least one trip involving one or more overnight stays away from home. In total, there were 21.1 million such trips, representing a 29% increase from 2021, but nearly the same as the period just before the Covid-19 pandemic (2019: 21.9 million).
To leverage the current market buzz effectively, it is vital to utilize the latest data analysis and marketing insights. By doing so, promotional activities can be tailored to target Switzerland, thereby raising interest and ultimately increasing the number of Swiss travelers taking them beyond the beaten path.
