Voice4Africa: Tourism Builds Bridges – Especially in Times of Social Tension

Frankfurt am Main, 20 July 2026. In light of the social challenges currently unfolding in various parts of the world, including South Africa, the tourism initiative Voice4Africa highlights the unifying power of travel. The initiative believes that tourism plays a vital role in fostering intercultural understanding, driving economic development, and promoting peaceful coexistence particularly across the African continent, where cross-border cooperation is becoming increasingly important.

“It is especially in challenging times that we see the true value of personal encounters. Travel fosters understanding, breaks down prejudice, and reminds us that people have far more in common than what divides them. Tourism builds bridges where others build walls,” says Hanna Kleber, Founder of Voice4Africa.
Across Africa, cooperation and regional integration continue to gain momentum. This is particularly evident in tourism and conservation. Southern Africa’s Transfrontier Conservation Areas are among the world’s leading examples of how neighbouring countries can jointly protect shared natural and cultural landscapes while promoting sustainable tourism development. They demonstrate that cross-border collaboration benefits not only biodiversity but also the communities that depend on these landscapes.

Greater Mobility, Stronger Connections: Africa Moves Closer Together

Pan-African integration is also accelerating on the political and economic front. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is strengthening economic ties across the continent, while the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) aims to liberalise air travel within Africa, making travel easier, more accessible, and more affordable.

At the same time, an increasing number of African countries are simplifying entry requirements for citizens of other African nations. According to the Africa Visa Openness Index 2025, approximately 28 percent of intra-African travel routes are now visa-free; the highest level ever recorded.

“These developments are encouraging. They demonstrate that many African countries are embracing greater openness, cooperation, and mobility. When people travel across their own continent, they create new economic opportunities while deepening their appreciation of Africa’s cultural diversity. Tourism creates jobs, supports local businesses, and encourages meaningful exchanges between people from different backgrounds. That is where its unique strength lies,” Kleber adds.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in many African countries, supporting millions of jobs. At the same time, it helps preserve cultural heritage, strengthens dialogue between societies, and creates opportunities for sustainable and inclusive growth.
